Speaking from a point of view of one who belongs to the Yajurvedic shakha,
after doing the kaamokaarishiit japam, keeping the shika, the rest of the
hair
from one's head is removed. During this process, it is only natural that
one's
yaj~nyopavitam gets polluted. Hence the changing of the yaj~nyopavitam.
And then we proceed for the Gayatri Japam.

Another interesting fact is that the starting of any new (vedic) studies on
the
day >after< Sravani Paurnami (i.e. on, Sravana Krishna Paksha,
Prathami/Paadyami)
is considered as inappropriate. Any reasons ?

Subject: Avaniavittam and Gayathri Japam

| Dear members,
|
| I have had a lingering doubt about the significance of Gayathri JApam and
Avaniavittam. Why do we have to change our poonals on both the days, which
come in quick succession.
|
| My initial understanding was that gaythri japam is performed immediately
after avaniavittam, in order to strengthen the poonal by reciting the sacred
gayathri manthram.
|
| But since I follow the Sama veda, my avaniavittam follows gayathri japam.
Being ingnorant, I fail to understand the significance of performing the
gayathri japam and then discarding that poonal to wear another one.
|
| I hope the learned members would clear my doubt.
