Avaniavittam and Gayathri Japam
From the Bhakti List Archives

Dear members, I have had a lingering doubt about the significance of Gayathri JApam and Avaniavittam. Why do we have to change our poonals on both the days, which come in quick succession. My initial understanding was that gaythri japam is performed immediately after avaniavittam, in order to strengthen the poonal by reciting the sacred gayathri manthram. But since I follow the Sama veda, my avaniavittam follows gayathri japam. Being ingnorant, I fail to understand the significance of performing the gayathri japam and then discarding that poonal to wear another one. I hope the learned members would clear my doubt. - adiyen acharyan ramanuja dasan.
