Dear Rajeev,
it is possible to shorten it. I have know of my grandfather who used to take
the lower portion of the strands, twist them like a twisted pair of copper,
double it up and make a knot with the rest of the strands.
I know I am not able to convey. the only other way is to write a diagram
and post it.
