yagyopavitam length

Are there are any "prescribed" methods of shortening one's
yagyopavitam(s) ?. The one that I recieved from India
turned out to be a bit longer then I expected (about 6 in below
the nAbhi). I do not think that one sh/could shorten it just
by making knots.
