SrI: Dear Sri Mani, You have narrated so well about SatyakAma jAbAla story. Thanks. You wrote: What is remarkable about this episode is the unornamented truthfulness of satyakAma, and gautama's willing acceptance of him for this very reason. The teaching is that one's internal qualities are what makes one fit to receive sacred instruction. The actual origin of satyakAma is unknown; but his speaking the truth despite the personal consequences makes him worthy of instruction, makes him worthy of the title "brAhmana". The Upanishad here places emphasis on inner virtue over birth. ================= Very true! That is an excellent understanding. However, adiyEn's indulgence in understanding this as (for my own benefit) is: if you are a brahmin, then you will obviously be speaking truth alone. (sathyam bruyAth; priyam bruyAth; na sathyamcha nAnrutham bruyAth- speak truth' speak sweet; if it is untrue (but sweet), remain silent). How many of us (so called born brahmins fall in "speaking truth and sweet always" category..? (I don't) manatthilOr thUymai illai; vaakkilOr insollillai. Please forgive me for my indulgence Regards Narayana Narayana adiyEn Narayana Dasan madhavakkannan -------------------------------------------------------------- - SrImate rAmAnujAya namaH - To Post a message, send it to: bhakti-list@yahoogroups.com Archives: http://ramanuja.org/sv/bhakti/archives/ Your use of Yahoo!
