Avanti is certainly in Madhya pradesh. Today, Avanti is known as Ujjain.

Avanti is famous for many thing. It is not a Sri Vaishnava Divya Desam but
one of the 12 Jyotirlinga Kshetrams which is also one of the Shiva Sthalams
glorified by the NayanmArs.

Avanti was the capital of King VikramAditya Chandragupta of the Maurya
period. Avanti has a vast legacy of Sanskrit behind it. Poets like KalidAsa
adorned it.

More information can be found here:

http://www.templenet.com/Madhya/ujjain.html

That website also lists all Sri Vaishnava Divya Desams. It is quite good.

Interestingly, Avanti Sundari Katha which is one of the earliest novels in
the world was written by Dandi's son in the pallava court in 7th Century
Tamil Nadu!
