Idol or Deity

Srimathe Ramanujaya namah:
Dearest Sri Vaishnavas,
Accept my pranams. I just have this doubt about the usage of the word idol. I heard from some of our sampradaya elders it should be Deities and not idols when we refer to the vigrahas of various moorthis. It is just that the word idol was meant to discredit our Sanathana Dharm by the British.
Our learned elders- please give your comments.
