AN APPEAL

The most ancient and hoary name of Tirunelveli junction is Veeraraghavapuram.
It has been named after Swami Veeraraghavar, the Presiding Deity in the temple
of Sri Varadharajaperumal in Nellai. This celebrated Vaishnavite temple was
constructed by Krishnavarma of the Lunar Dynasty who ruled this region with
Veeraraghavapuram as his capital town. Observing the deep piety of the king,
the neighbouring ruler utilised this opportunity to attack him. Desperately,
King Krishnavarma prayed to Sri Varadharajaperumal and chanted the name of
Lord Rama endlessly. Pleased with Krishnavarma's devotion, the Lord assumed
the form of the King, victoriously fought the foe with Sri Lakshmana as His
Chieftain and the monkey regimen led by Sugreeva. HE also appears as
Veeraraghavaperumal, the embodiment of bravery and valour. Deeply moved by the
Divine Vision, the king sang a number of slokas in praise of the Lord, as stated
in the Tamirabarani Mahathmiam. He then constructed a temple for
Sri Veeraraghavar and also the Veeraraghava Theerthakattam in the river
Tamirabarani.

Sri Varadharajaperumal Kaingarya Sabai has been formed to perform the holy task
of renovating this 500 year old temple and perform Mahakumbabhishekam after a
gap of 95 years, on 30 th MAY 1996, in the presence of Srimath Sri Vanamamalai
Ramanuja Jeer Swamigal. Construction of Rajagopuram is under consideration.
The estimated cost of the project is about Rs.25 lakhs.

A souvenir will be released in commemoration of the Mahakumbhabhishekam.
The public and philanthropists are kindly requested to contribute liberally.

THANK YOU.
