This is speculation as well.. Having been brought up in north India, I had
always believed that the name Kannan ,while meaningful in itself, was
borrowed from what Braj-vasis lovingly called (and still call) our
Kannan--Kanahaiyaa or Kaanha. This still doesn't explain why they called
him that though. Maybe it was a commonly used "pet-name" for the name
Krishna.
