I don't think that I can help much with the other questions,
but since I am probably just as much an appreciator of
prasadam as anyone else:

Among the practicing SriVaishnava families in Andhra that I
know of, my own included, this is the traditional practice.
Andal seems to be a favorite (this is probably another universal
aspect among our families) in both my wife's side and my
side of the family, so we try not to skimp on whatever little
tradition that we know in this regard.

However - I have confirmed this with two of our experts in
town on this, my mother and Sri C. S. Ramesh's mother - some
families, both in Andhra and Tamizh Nadu, will prepare
thirukannamadhu in place of sakkarai pongal on koodaarai
vellum, and will also include kadamba sAdham on muppathu moovar.

My mother also recalls that her mother used to prepare
puliyOdharai (known as pulihOra or pulihAra among the Telugu
speaking people) on nAyakanaay.

It does not cease to amaze me, though, just how popular
thiruppAvai and mArgazhi is for SriVaishnavas throughout the
south. Andal, probably as much as Perumal Himself, has a
special in all our hearts, unifying us as a community and as
a tradition.
