From the Bhakti List Archives

• January 2, 1997

Dear Members of the Bhakthi Group :

During the Holidays and the days of Sathsangam
at Buffalo , NY , I missed the postings for the period
of the 11 th to 15th day of Dhanur Maasam that I undertook
as a Yajnam . Hence I am catching up on them before
posting the others starting from 18th day , which is due today .
Please bear with me while I catch up on the delinquent days .
I do not have acopy of the tenth day posting of mine. I must
have erased it. I have requested Mrs.Satyan to send me a copy
of that posting. Meanwhile , I will go from memory and start
from where I think left off. If there are some overlaps , please
treat them as repeat statements for emphasis. Thanks .

ARTHA PANCHAKAM
************************
In the posting for the tenth day , I referred to the
five aspects of Artha panchakam as : ParamAthma
Svarupam , JeevAthama Svarupam , UpAya Svarupam . Pala
Svarupam and Virodhi Svarupam . These are the Sambhandha
Viseshams( Special affiliations ), which serve as the foundation for
the Rahasya Trayams associated with NarayanAdhi Sabdhams
according to Swami Desikan . These are also referred to as
ShadarthAs(six meanings ) . Swami Desikan in his magnum opus
Rahasya Traya Saaram (RTS ) points out that there is no
difference between Artha Panchakam and Shadarthams .

Artha Panchakam is also known by other names
such as Anju PoruL (VilAmcholai Pillai in Saptha Kaadai ) ,
Jnaathaleeya Panchakam ( NaayanAr , Author of
Acharya Hrudhayam and brother of Sri PiLLai LokAcharyar ) .
NayanAr has concluded that the true knowledge about
Artha Panchakam is the means for unalloyed bliss
( Niradhisaya Aanandha Hethu : ) . NayanAr"s brother ,
Sri PiLLai LokAchAryAr in his Mumukshu Pati has indicated
that all what we need to know are covered by Arthapanchakam
( Ariya vEndum arthamellAm ) . He has stated that the AzhwAr's
sacred prabhandhams are rooted in the Artha Panchakam .

Swami Desikan has devoted the entire fourth chapter of
RTS on Artha Panchakam . It is the opinion of our AcharyAs
that Thiruppavai is the elaboration of the Artha Panchakam .
Reference has already been made that the three TattvAs
(Chidh , Achidh and IswarA ) along with Hitam and PurushArthams
make up the pentad of Artha Panchakam . We shall dwell upon
the Tattva, Hita , PurushArthams elaborated by the divine hymns
of Thiruppavai of GodhA Piratti in the subsequent postings until
I catch up with the posting for today ( January 2 , 1997: the 18th
day of Dhanur Maasam ) .
