Sri Ramanujacharya's Thirunakshaththiram

According to Suryamana calendar, our Acharyas's Thirunakshaththiram is on 1
May (chiththirai, Thiruvadarai).  According to Chandramana  calendar the
thirunakshaththiram appears to be on 31 March 1998.  Traditionally, most
Srivaishnavas observe the Acharya's Birthday in Chiththirai Thiruvadharai
(Arudra) and it is usually between 13 April and 14 May. This type of
diffrence is common and is based on the families traditions.

Chiththirai Vishu is the New Year day celebrated in accordance with
Suryamana calendar (based on Sun's movement). There are four (4) Vishus
occuring in Chiththirai, Adi, Aippasi and Thai maasam. When the Sun enters
Aries (mesha), it is Chiththirai Vishu and the start of the New Year
(varusha pirappu). This tradition is followed by families from Tamil Nadu,
Kerala, Assam, Bengal, Gujarath, and Punjab. Men who perform tharpanam
(rites) for the deceased parents do a special vishu tharpanam to obtain
blessings of the forefathers. Hence, oil bath is not allowed on this day.
Chiththirai Vishu falls between  April 13 and April 17.

Ugadi is the New Year day celebrated in accordance with Chandramana calendar
(based on moon's movement). The New Year  starts on Amavasa day (when the
Moon and Sun are very close to each other). However, Ugadi is celebrated a
day after Amavasa. This tradition is followed by families from Karnataka,
Andhra Pradesh and other parts of India.  Ugadi  falls between March 15 and
April 13.
